Our service center has just what you need for the best tire service around! Keep reading as we discuss why your tires are important, the point of tire rotations, and when to get a new set.

Why are tires important?

The main function of your Chrysler or Dodge's tires include transmitting traction and braking forces to the road surface and supporting the vehicle load, as well as changing and maintaining the direction of travel and absorbing road shocks. All of these functions are vital when traveling from point a to point b to ensure that you get to your destination safely. If the weather is bad or the road conditions aren't great and your tires are in rough shape, your safety is compromised. Besides traction, the air in your tires can also play a part in the health of your vehicle and your safety. If some of the tires have less air than the others, the engine starts working harder, the alignment of your vehicle can be off, and your tires start to wear unevenly. Maintaining good tires is pretty important!

Why are tire rotations important?

A tire rotation involves moving tires from one position to another on the vehicle. The typical tire rotation moves the front tires to the rear and the rear tires to the front and one set of tires typically changes sides. For example, when the rear tires are moved to the front, the mechanics will move the left rear tire to the front right position. There are tons of different rotation patterns, however. Tire rotations are done to ensure that they are wearing evenly, extending the life of the tire, saving you money. Even wear does so much more than just save you money though, it is also important for balanced handling. For example, when tire rotations are performed on an FWD vehicle, the front tires in the front will have less tread than the rear tires and this could make it more difficult to control the vehicle, especially if the road conditions are bad.

How do I know if I need new tires?

There are three things to consider when contemplating whether or not you need a new set of tires: tread wear, exposure to heat and age. To check the tread of your tires, you can perform the quick "penny test". Find a penny and place it into the middle of the tire tread with President Lincoln's head facing down. If at any point when placing the penny into the tread, you can see the top of his head, it is time for a new set of tires. Regardless of the tread wear, the age of your tires matter. Generally the manufacturers recommend that you replace your tires every 10 years. Finally, the weather. Extreme weather conditions -- from freezing cold to ice to hot summer days -- come together with bad road conditions, damaging your tires.
