Chrysler Pacifica PHEV Charging FAQs

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, or PHEV for short, is a seamless blend of three powertrains: internal combustion engine, hybrid electric vehicle, and electric vehicle. The internal combustion engine for the Chrysler Pacifica PHEV is the same 3.6L V6 engine that comes standard with the Pacifica. Meanwhile, one electric motor is placed at the front of the V6 engine, replacing the traditional alternator. Meanwhile, inside the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, there is another electric motor replacing the torque converter. The electric motors are powered by a 16-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack recharged by an external power source with a charging cable. With a full charge and full tank of gas, the Pacifica PHEV offers up to 520 miles of total driving range, 30 miles of all-electric driving, and up to 82 MPGe. 

There are two types of EV chargers compatible with PHEVs. Level 1 chargers come with the purchase of a new PHEV. The Level 1 charger plugs into a household 120-volt three-prong outlet. This gives the Pacifica PHEV a full charge in roughly 14 hours. Meanwhile, a Level 2 charging station is available for purchase from Mopar. You can use a Level 2 charger in two ways. It can be plugged into a 240-volt outlet, like the one you'd plug a washing machine into. Or, the more popular method is to have it hardwired into your home's electrical system. The benefit of this is to provide more the vehicle with more efficient charging. A Level 2 charger gives the Pacifica PHEV a full charge in roughly two hours. The battery is essentially the heart of your PHEV. Therefore, it is essential for you to understand how it works and how to best care for it. Like other devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, such as smartphones, your PHEV battery will perform best when it is taken care of, as improper care can lead to decreased driving range and battery life. To extend your battery's longevity, avoiding overcharging is essential. Creating a charging schedule is a great way to protect your battery. It's advisable to allow your battery to get down to approximately 15% before plugging it in and then stopping charging at around 85%. This prevents overcharging while providing you with sufficient range for everyday driving. When you're anticipating a longer journey and you're unsure of where you can find a charging station is a situation where you can charge up to 100%. Another tip is to choose optimal charging times. Electrical grids have on-peak and off-peak hours. On-peak hours are between seven in the morning and eleven at night, when most energy is being used. Off-peak hours are between midnight and six in the morning, when less electricity is being used. This makes charging your vehicle overnight an excellent idea. All Level 2 chargers provided by Mopar come enabled with WiFi, allowing you to control your PHEVs charging schedule from your smartphone. Meanwhile, smart grid optimization helps you reduce energy consumption by charging during off-peak hours.
