Healthy Travel is the Best Travel

A friend recently went on a two-week trip to Rwanda and devoured the beautiful African countryside via guided Jeep tours and safaris. Her family was worried she would get sick, exposed to unfamiliar terrain rife with mosquitoes and unclean water. Not only did she stay healthy, but she thrived despite loved ones' worries. I asked for her best stay-healthy-while-traveling tips are and this is what she shared:

Hand-sanitizer: Without realizing it, we're constantly touching our faces to move hair out of our eyes or scratch our noses. When clean (or any!) water is scarce, using antibacterial sanitizer keeps hands free of germs, which means our face holes are germ-free, too!

Rest: Though difficult because you want to take in the sights and sounds while traveling, it's imperative to give your body enough rest to ward off germs.

Eat and drink healthfully: Desserts and fancy drinks are certainly tempting, and we all like to kick back and relax when on vacation. But bombarding our bodies with too many unhealthy foods lowers our immune systems, increasing the risk of getting sick.

Exercise: If, like my friend, your trip consists of more sedentary events, pepper your day with physical activity to keep your body limber and the blood flowing.

Mental health: Vacations are exciting because they're a departure from our normal routine, but there's something to be said for the way our "normal" keeps us grounded and calm. If you have a daily regimen that includes things like yoga, journaling, or medication, be consistent with these things especially when traveling.
