Check out our off-road capable Jeeps at Cuero Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram
One of the best things about owning a Jeep is the ability to go off-roading, as Jeeps are built to conquer all kinds of different terrain and take on various obstacles that happen to get in your way. If you have answered the call of adventure but have never before been off-roading, you need to know how to stay safe when you hit the trails. That's where we come in! Below you will find some helpful safety tips to help you when you go off-roading and once you're done reading, be sure to check out our entire Jeep inventory here on our website!
Have your Jeep checked out
Before you head off the road, you need to ensure that your Jeep is thoroughly inspected by our experts here at Cuero Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram to ensure everything is functioning the way it should. Of course, you won't want anything bad to happen on your trip, so we will check your oil and coolant levels and even top off your windshield wiper fluid if necessary. We will check your tire pressure and even let out a little air if your tires are over-inflated and lower-inflated tires are better equipped to handle the off-road.
Get to know your Jeep
Next, you will want to get a good handle on your Jeeps capabilities, like knowing how much ground clearance you have above and underneath your Jeep. You also need to ensure you have the right Jeep Wrangler off-road parts that will make your off-road adventure a little safer and more efficient. In addition, when you go off-roading, you will need the proper tools in case you get stuck on a tough obstacle. Things you should bring with you include a recovery kit, a flashlight, work gloves, an air compressor, a jump start kit, a tire repair kit, hand tools, and a jack.
Never go alone and know your limits
In case an emergancy should happen, you never want to be stuck out there on your own, Be sure to ride with at least one passenger so you will have immediate help if you ever get stranded. In addition, off-roading with friends is a lot more fun than having to off-road by yourself. Once you do get out on the trails, you should never have to push your Jeep or yourself to its limitations. If you are uncomfortable going over a particular object, then don't. Also, while you're out off-roading, you need to make sure you understand the trail. You might need to be flexible but never run into surprises you're uncomfortable with.
Drive safe
While going off-roading, be sure to drive over hills up and down. You never want to drive diagonally and risk rolling your Jeep over. By that same token, you never want to cross obstacles at an angle, and you will want to climb over them one wheel at a time. Finally, you need always to pay attention and remain aware of your surroundings as this is not the place to be texting and driving, and you always need to be mindful of the next obstacle.
Drive in lower gears
Off-roading in your Jeep requires you to drive slowly and in lower gear. You should never change gears in the middle of an obstacle; instead, estimate which gear you should be in beforehand to the best of your knowledge. Finally, while off-roading, be sure to be curious about other drivers and respect the trails. Obey the same rules off the road as you do on it, such as obeying the right of way, yielding to other off-roaders, and giving them the space they need to complete an obstacle.
